Student Affairs Office Launches "Sustainable Project" with Mascot "Hoi Shan" to Promote Sustainability

03-13,2026

The Student Affairs Office of Hong Kong Chu Hai College will launch the " Sustainable Project " in March 2026, featuring a series of simple and engaging activities designed to raise students' awareness of environmental issues and encourage them to adopt green practices in their daily lives.

To enhance the approachability and visibility of the initiative, the Student Affairs Office has specially designed a mascot – "Hoi Shan" (海珊). This adorable coral-inspired character will accompany students throughout their sustainability journey on campus.

Coral as Prototype: Delivering an Environmental Message

"Hoi Shan" is modelled after coral, an endangered species, carrying three layers of meaningful symbolism:

Ecological Indicator: Coral serves as a key indicator of ocean health; its condition directly reflects environmental quality, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water).

Local Relevance: Hong Kong waters are home to rich coral resources (such as Hoi Ha Wan and Tung Ping Chau). Using coral as a prototype connects the campaign to local environmental issues, enhancing a sense of participation.

Wisdom of Life: Coral grows slowly yet forms magnificent reefs, symbolising that sustainable development requires patient accumulation. The symbiotic relationship between coral and zooxanthellae embodies the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.

March Activity Month: Six Hands-on Experiences

March 2026 marks the activity month for the "Sustainable Project." Six activities covering planting, recycling, and ecology will be rolled out, all guided by the principle of being "simple, fun, and hands-on" :

Date Activity Name Description
March Green Partner – Bottle Recycling Drive Collect clean plastic bottles and do your part to protect the environment
17 March Environmental Education Game Booths In collaboration with the "Green Link" programme, learn about waste sorting, carbon footprint, and more through interactive games
17 March Succulent Planting DIY Workshop Learn about the characteristics of succulents; create unique potted plants using eco-friendly planters
25 March Living Ecosystem Aquarium Workshop Build a miniature "aquaponics" ecosystem and experience the balance of nature
10 April "Green Tuen Mun" Tour & Eco-Workshop Visit the recycling facilities and learn how to sort waste properly for clean recycling; Turn fruit waste and recycled plastic bottles into eco-enzyme cleaner.

A Practical Start: Building Green Momentum

The "Sustainable Project" will commence with a pilot phase in March 2026, with plans to expand into year-round themed activities in the future, including green classrooms, campus practices, ecological conservation, themed festivals and post-recycling follow-up actions – gradually integrating sustainability into the fabric of college life.

All staffs and students are warmly welcomed to participate actively. Let's join hands to protect our planet.
